Choosing a good enterprise software program will be one of the key ingredients to making a company successful in the competitive business world. There are specific techniques and criteria that need to be followed in order to achieve the requisite amount of balance.   1. The ability to integrate easily within the software systems that the company is using. This is a crucial factor when assessing whether a particular enterprise software program is working well. This is something that one would expect at the beginning of the employee’s career but if it becomes a regular occurrence, then the training costs will go through the roof. Of course it is not the fault of the employee that the company is getting systems that are so different form the past that they are nearly impossible to work with. It is the responsibility of the people who commission the enterprise software to ensure that it can easily embed within the existing framework in the enterprise.
  2. Linked to the point above is the absolute need to break with the past if it does not help the company. Getting new enterprise software will involve abandon practices that have given employees comfort for a considerable period of time. Some people are simply unable to cope with change and they react by becoming disruptive. This can cause performance management issues that take ages to resolve. Meanwhile the deadline for delivering the enterprise software will come and pass. One might argue that there is a paradox between trying to embed new systems and getting rid of the old. However the key point is to know that change has to be necessary. The organization should not change the enterprise software system unless it is necessary and if it is necessary nothing should stand in the way of achieving this objective.
  3. The enterprise software should make business sense it terms of being value for money. The cost will determine whether the impact on the bottom line is so expensive as to cause serious problems for other parts of the organizations. This is the challenge that normally defeats government departments because they insist on purchasing certain enterprise software enhancements but then do not consider the business value of such projects. Inevitably they end up making loses which are picked up by the tax payer. The private company does not have this kind of luxury because the government is not giving it tax dollars.
